As a member agency of the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Hyde Park-Kenwood Food Pantry’s mission for over 40 years has been to provide supplemental nutrition for our neighbors on the mid-South Side of Chicago, and a place for neighbors, volunteers and clients, to meet over the common concern and need for good, healthy food. Our motto is “neighbors with neighbors”. We operate on a “client choice” model, such that each household can choose the food that they want and need for their families (fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen meat and fish, pasta, peanut butter, canned goods, dried cereal, etc.).
We are also committed to sustainable practices, such as participating in a Greater Chicago Food Depository rescue food program with a Jewel-Osco store in McKinley Park, composting all our organic waste, recycling all cardboard food storage boxes, and encouraging clients to bring reusable shopping bags. We also partner with the 62nd Street Community Garden, which shares its fresh-picked produce with us every Saturday from July 1 to October 1.
